“Wounds of Jesus” Series

Pottery by Emily Flaherty

Being clay in the Hands of the Potter involves a certain crucifixion. While there are no nails or hammer, there is a constant fiat which must be sung and a fire through which the clay must pass into perfection. St. Peter says to “not be surprised that a trial by fire is occurring among you,” and he continues, “Those who suffer in accord with God’s will, hand their souls over to a faithful creator as they do good” (1 Peter 5:12, 19). In order to allow ourselves to suffer our particular crucifixions with Christ, we must first trust in the good intentions of our Heavenly Father, as mentioned in the “Daughter” Series. To rest in this love is the foundation of our relationship with Him. It was from that place that Jesus was able to accept the Cross from the Father. “It was the Lord’s will to crush him with pain” (Is 53:10) - Even in the face of this reality, He trusted His good intentions, not only for all humanity but for Himself in particular.

Below you will find some inspirations and songs that came during the creative process alongside the Lord:

Wounded Hands:

What began as being held in the Father’s Hands ends again in His Hands; the first, His gift of life, the second, our choice – “Father, into Your Hands I commend my spirit. Having said this, He breathed His last” (Luke 23:46).

How beautiful that life is simply a continual surrender, and in each surrender is a moment of death leading to new life. “What is man that He is mindful of us?” (Psalm 8:4). “Yet He knows that we are only dust” (Psalm 103:14). Out of dust He has made us and to dust we shall return. We were molded by Him and loved into existence. As Love leaned into me to form my very being, I lean into Him again in a final surrender that becomes eternal. The Father says, “Let Me hold you again.”…and I return into His Hands.

Wounded Heart

“Because my heart thirsts for You”…

…my heart echoes the words that You spoke to me first.

“I thirst,” You said, as You bled from the Cross.

You satisfy my own thirst with Yours first. And yet in Your thirst You give, You pour out all that You have for us. Because Your love is an eternal well, You are pouring Yourself out continually, even amidst Your own thirst.

You knew my thirst for You before I even felt it or spoke the words on my lips. You gave Yourself to satisfy me before I even existed.  You knew the thoughts and needs of my heart before I even voiced them, and “You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing” (Psalm 145:16). May my love satisfy Yours, too.

Wounded Feet:

Every strike was a “yes” from Your Heart to me. It was Your choice out of love that You remained on the Cross. You could have come down at any moment, but You chose to remain, even amidst the temptations from the crowd. Your “yes” from the Cross is the grace that enables my “yes” to the love with which Your tender Hands hold and mold me. With the strength from Your “yes,” I give mine back to You. Because of Your “yes,” I am able to make mine once again.

Wounded Side:

“You press into me, and I press back into You.”

My Side is the Well from which you can come to receive My Water. Let My Divine Mercy come and wash over you like the rain. Just receive.

Wounded Head:

How fitting it was that as I made this, my own pride rose within me. It was this crown of thorns that was the cost for my pride. The King of Kings, deserving of all glory, was crowned with thorns on my behalf.

Thank you, Jesus, for what You did for us <3
